Matcha Expert
About

The UK's independent matcha guide.

We started Matcha Expert because the existing matcha internet was either glossy ad copy or biohacker shouting. We wanted something more useful for beginners, help understand the why and that is honest for daily drinkers, and unwilling to be paid for an opinion.

Matcha Expert is a small, independent editorial site based in the UK. We test, score and write about matcha powders, tools and rituals — and we publish what we actually think, not what a brand has paid us to say.

What we do

We buy matcha at retail, brew it under consistent conditions, and score each tin against three criteria — flavour, daily drinking and beginner-friendliness. We publish full reviews, calm buying guides, and recipes we actually make at home. Everything is UK-focused: prices in pounds, water from a normal kettle, brands available without import duty.

What we don't do

  • We don't accept payment for reviews or rankings.
  • We don't accept "PR samples" without disclosing them — and we still pay for our editor's-pick tins ourselves.
  • We don't make medical claims. Matcha is a tea, not a supplement.
  • We don't run "best of" lists with twenty tins we haven't tasted.

How we make money

Matcha Expert is supported by affiliate links. When you click a link to a brand we've reviewed and decide to buy, we earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. That money pays for the next round of tins, the website, and the time it takes to write.

Crucially: affiliate income never determines the score. A brand can pay zero commission and still be our editor's pick. A brand can pay a generous commission and still be ranked last. The full affiliate disclosure sets out exactly how this works.

A calmer option, not a replacement

I'm not here to tell anyone to give up coffee. I still love it, and I still drink it daily. But matcha has become part of how I balance my daily energy, it provides a bit more focus without quite the same edge, and potential impact on my sleep. I've been drinking different green teas for years, and Matcha has become part of my tea and caffeine journey. Matcha Expert began as a way to make sense of the options — what tastes good, what feels beginner-friendly, and what is genuinely worth spending money on.

Who we are

We're a small editorial team based in the UK. We've been drinking green teas and matcha on and off for years, but we built this site because we wished it had existed when we were starting out. The voice is "we" because writing is a team effort — recipes are tested by more than one person; reviews are blind-tasted by at least two.
